When to Book My Senior Session
Updated: Feb 27
How far in advance should you book and plan your senior session? There are a lot of things that go into planning your senior session - so you need to make sure you have enough time to plan. Typically I recommend booking your senior session about 2-3 months in advance to make sure you can get the date that you want. Or in some cases for popular dates, I would recommend booking the date as soon as it comes available.

Trust me when I say your Senior Year is going to be crazy busy and loaded with activities and things that need to be done. If you plan ahead it will make this special time less stressful. I know it's hard to pick a date in the future. But let's think about it, if there is a sport that you are active in you should know what months/days of the week to avoid. Pick a month that should both work with your schedule and has the best options of what you want in your session.
Most photographers only release a certain amount of months in advance for booking. If you find the photographer that you love, be sure to get on their waiting list and follow them on social media to stay in the know.
I recommend starting to research and find the photographer you want to work with during your junior year. Pay attention when friends who are currently seniors are posting their senior sessions. Who did they use, did you like or dislike their portraits? If you like the style of that particular photographer then follow them for awhile on social media to learn who they are and see their personality and what other sessions look like. Hopefully they will be posting behind the scenes as well so you can get a peek into their sessions.
You can also search on Google, Instagram and Facebook for photographers in your area and be sure to read their reviews.
Think about what is important to you and what YOU WANT out of your Senior Session.
Find that photographer that can offer what is important to you and make sure they will LISTEN to you and what you want. The best photographers are the ones that LISTEN to your ideas and help you plan the best senior session.
RED FLAG - if you start talking to a photographer and they don't acknowledge what you want in your session or they don't try to help achieve your dream session - WALK AWAY!
Your photographer should ask and listen to what you want and offer suggestions of locations, seasons etc to capture what you desire in your senior session. They should brain storm with you if you are not sure of what you want. They should offer options and suggestions to help create the BEST SENIOR SESSION!
I am a planner, during my planning calls with my seniors I always ask them first what they want in their session, what their dream is. I want them to tell me first what they desire so that I can help lead them in the direction that will make them happy.
I say this ALL THE TIME, I will offer suggestions and please tell me if you don't like it - you won't hurt my feelings. But I won't know if you like something unless you tell me. I have to get to know you so that I can create something BEAUTIFUL FOR YOU!!
